Tiers describe a more rough scale for a ship's rank. One ship tier increases every 3 ship ranks.
In most fights, the ship of the highest tier of your currently active ships will match you with players of the same tier.
Previously, the tiers were part of the ships name, e.g. Inquisitor V (tier 5).
