Asteroid
Asteroids are common rock formations floating in space. They come in multiple sizes, and the larger ones often act as terrain to maneuver around. Smaller asteroids can be attacked with your ship's weapons to obtain valuable resources. Any weapon/equipment capable of dealing damage will assist in destroying an asteroid. Asteroids randomly appear in Open Space, with multiple types available to mine for resources. They are indicated by a circular symbol on your HUD when flying in Open Space.
Asteroid types include:
- Poor Asteroid
- Asteroid
- Rich Asteroid
- Graphite Asteroid
- Rich Graphite Asteroid
The materials that asteroids drop are used for crafting advanced ships. Asteroids can provide the following items from their ore drops:
- Enriched Monocrystal
- Alien Capacitor/Alien technology (returning to hangar will reward the player with iridium.)
- Impure graphite
- Impure silicon
- Vanadium
- Impure osmium
- Crystal shard
- Credits
Depending on the type of asteroid mined, a player can obtain better rewards. Rich asteroids provide better resources when mined correctly, compared to regular and poor asteroids. Some types of asteroids only drop a specific type of ore - i.e Iridium Spines only drops Graphite Ore. A suitable asteroid can be found with the help of a special item called a “Spatial Scanner”.
How To Mine Asteroids
- Asteroids can be mined by attacking them with any weapon or offensive module.
- Asteroids will begin to glow orange as they take more damage.
- When an asteroid has been sufficiently damaged by a player, it will break and drop ores for players to collect.
In order to mine an Asteroid, you need to attack it. While dealing damage, the Asteroid's surface will turn orange, representing the Asteroid heating up. Consistently damage the Asteroid, and you will eventually destroy it. A brighter color represents a higher temperature.
The brighter an Asteroid is during its destruction means there is a greater chance of acquiring more valuable resources after it breaks apart.
In order to guarantee better drops, players should attempt to keep an Asteroid as hot as possible by making it consistently glow brightly from repeated attacks.
Attacking an asteroid too quickly will result in the Asteroid overheating, and the asteroid will collapse, destroying itself and the resources inside it. If a player is too close to the asteroid, they will take damage. Players should be careful to not overheat asteroids, as overheated asteroids drop nothing.
A Poor Asteroid's temperature is more difficult to judge, as it does not change much in color.
Rich asteroids with a metallic color typically have the best credit drops when mined correctly, dropping anywhere from 250k-1.5M credits.
